Benicar HCT (olmesartan/hydrochlorothiazide) is a drug used to treat high blood pressure. The two medications it is made up of work together to reduce hypertension. Hydrochlorothiazide is a water pill that helps prevent too much salt absorption by increasing the production of urine. Olmesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels allowing easy passage of blood thus lowering blood pressure.
Always use Benicar HCT as directed by one’s physician. Take this medication orally usually once or twice daily with or without food, or as directed by one’s doctor. Benicar HCT can cause increased urination so it’s best to keep this in mind when it is close to one’s bedtime. If you also take medications for high cholesterol, avoid drug interactions by taking benicar at least 4 hours beforehand. If you feel the need to alter the dosage, consult your doctor first.
Do not take Benicar HCT if you are pregnant. There is a serious risk of harm to the unborn baby if you take this medication in your second or third trimester. Stop taking it immediately if you become pregnant and contact your physician immediately.
