Anusol HC Ointment is used to help relieve redness, itching, swelling, or other discomfort caused by skin conditions and other problems of the anal area. This medicine is a corticosteroid.

Follow the directions on your prescription or product label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use rectal Anusol HC Ointment exactly as directed. 

• For hemorrhoids, Anusol HC Ointment usually is used in adults and children 12 years and older up to 3 or 4 times daily. 
• Apply a thin layer of this medicine to the affected skin area. Rub it in gently. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after using this medicine.

Before using Anusol HC Ointment, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: diabetes, eye problems, infections, liver disease, stomach/intestinal problems and if you have allergies to it. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Rarely using corticosteroid medications for a long time can make it more difficult for your body to respond to physical stress. Before having surgery or emergency treatment, or if you get a serious illness/injury, tell your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication or have used this medication within the past few months.

Caution is advised when using this drug in children. Do not use this product over a large area or use tight-fitting diapers/plastic pants unless directed by your doctor.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Anusol HC Ointment may cause serious side effects, including:

• shortness of breath,
• swelling of your ankles or feet,
• muscle weakness,
• rapid weight gain (especially in your face or midsection),
• severe rectal pain or burning,
• bleeding from your rectum,
• severe stomach pain,
• sudden and severe headache,
• pain behind your eyes, and
• seizures

The most common side effects of Anusol HC Ointment include:

• mild rectal pain or burning,
• acne,
• changes in your menstrual periods,
• increased sweating, and
• increased facial or body hair growth
